Ground cover can refer to a lot of things, and in a lot of this site it directly references individual plants that do a better job than turf grass of keeping the ground covered. This is the conventional definition, too, but it doesn’t have to be. On this page, it’s exactly what it sounds like.
Covered ground is happy ground, and an unmown space is far, far better at that than turf grass will ever be. Some of these plants were deliberate, but many were volunteers or from reseeding.
Nature will naturally cover any space it can find. That’s a good thing. It’s easier to work together. There are so many gifts, even in this small space. Can you spot the carrots?
